Case Study

UK entrepreneur delivers more server computations using up to 90 per cent less electricity

"One of the requirements to building a reliable server is to ensure that each of the components that we install into it are themselves reliable. We have found Kingston’s DRAMs and SSDs to be very reliable and solid performers. And that’s been a key to earning and protecting our reputation for quality, low-power profile systems."

The Customer

Avantek Computer Limited (Avantek) designs and assembles low-energy profile, high-performance, highly scalable ARM-processor servers. The Leicestershire-based company is leveraging emerging and state-of-the-art technologies to dramatically improve the server performance-to-power ratio in favour of datacentres.

The Challenge

With 16 years of experience in the computer server business, Tony Lees knows a lot about running a business and how important it is to develop server offerings that differentiate the company from its competitors. So the development of his latest product line began with an in-depth analysis of the state of server-farm users in the UK.

What he found was that they spend a lot of money on electricity to operate and cool their servers. At the same time, the UK is facing potential blackouts from projected energy shortages. Together, these challenges have significantly raised the awareness of server operators about the watts their infrastructures consume.

“We set out to create server solutions that are disruptive to traditional notions of energy consumption. And we’ve done just that by architecting servers that significantly drive up the processing-to-power-use ratio for our customers.”

The Solution

The conservation needs of datacentre managers led Lees to design a low-power server using off-the-shelf components. Lees based the server on an ARM processor, and added an energy-sipping power supply, fans and other key components.

Optimising server processor-to-power ratio

  • Low-power consumption Kingston DRAM modules provide sufficient memory capacity to enable servers that can help end users maximise the number of virtual machines or transactions in their production environments.
  • Energy-efficient Kingston SSDs deliver orders of magnitude better performance than comparable HDDs while using much less energy.

“We ran stringent benchmark tests on SSDs and DRAMs from a number of suppliers. And we found the Kingston solutions to be performers.”

The Results

After implementing the Kingston DRAM and SSD solutions, managers achieved a number of benefits. These include:

  • The Avantek servers configured with Kingston DRAM and SSD solutions consume up to 90 per cent less power to run while drawing 50 per cent less power to cool.
  • Avantek customers report that Avantek servers deliver a significantly better processing-to-power ratio in their production environments.

“The KingstonConsult team’s technical knowledge has been a valuable aid in our development of an energy-conserving ARM server that improves the process-to-power ratio by a country mile.”

  • The reliability of the Avantek server components promotes and protects a reputation for delivering quality, production-environment server solutions.

“Our university customers use our servers to run everything from a 20,000 user e-mail system to complex human genome project computations,” explains Lees. “And their track record has been rock solid.”
