My DataTraveler is not being detected in Windows. Why?
There are several possible reasons why your DataTraveler is not being detected in Windows.
- The DataTraveler could be conflicting with a pre-assigned drive letter. To resolve this, do the following (do not do this for a "Privacy" drive that assigns two drive letters):
- Insert the DataTraveler and right-click on My Computer, which is located on your desktop or under the Start button on the Task Bar.
- Select "Manage."
- Select “Disk Management” in the left window pane.
- Locate the DataTraveler in the right window pane.
- Right-click on the drive and select “Change Drive Letter and Paths”.
- Click "Change" and select a new drive letter from the drop-down box. Then click "OK".
- The DataTraveler may be conflicting with pre-installed software. Disable all applications running in the background prior to installation of the DataTraveler.
- If you have never used the USB ports, make sure they are working and enabled via the BIOS. Refer to your system's manual for instructions on how to access the BIOS.
The USB ports should also be enabled in Device Manager.
To access Device Manger, right click My Computer and select "Properties".
In the System Properties dialog box, click on the Hardware tab and then on the Device Manager button.
Locate the Kingston DataTraveler, which is usually under "Hard disk controllers" or listed as "Other".
Right-click on the device and select the "Enable" option.
- Make sure you have the latest Windows Service Pack. Windows Service Packs contain fixes and updated drivers for USB devices.
To find out if you have a Service Pack installed, right-click My Computer and select "Properties".
The Windows version and Service Pack information is listed on the General tab under "System".
If a Service Pack is not listed, you can download it from the Microsoft Website.
- If you have a desktop computer, make sure the DataTraveler is inserted directly into one of the main USB ports on the back of the PC. Front ports, keyboard ports or USB hubs may not supply sufficient power for the high-speed DataTraveler to function properly.
- If the DataTraveler shows up in Disk Manager but not My Computer (Computer in Windows Vista and 7) or Explorer and you have TweakUI installed, it may have modified the registry to make drives hidden. To resolve this, go to “TweakUI Properties” and configure it to display drives.
- If you received a (Code 10) error and have more than one USB device inserted, remove the devices and insert the Kingston DataTraveler by itself. This error may indicate that your particular system cannot support more than one USB device at a time.
- Make sure you have the latest BIOS and/or firmware installed on the computer. The BIOS/firmware can be downloaded from the computer manufacturer’s Website.

My DataTraveler is 32GB or larger. I formatted it using NTFS and I want to format it back to FAT32. How do I do this?
Because the DataTraveler is 32GB or larger, Windows 7 will not allow you to format it to FAT32.
You will have to convert it using a Command Prompt.
Click on Start>Run and type in CMD and click on the OK button.
Type the following in the command prompt (see image).
Replace F with the drive letter for your drive.
Please take notice of the spaces in between.

The Kingston driver loads properly but the drive does not show up in My Computer. If you look at Device Manager, Disk Drives, Kingston Properties, under the Settings tab, there is no drive letter listed in the appropriate field. Another USB device, such as a printer, works fine so we know that the port is enabled. How do I resolve this?
Unplug the other USB device, insert the DataTraveler drive and restart the system.
After the DataTraveler is configured you should then be able to connect the other USB device.
FAQ: KDT-010611-GEN-15
When I insert the DataTraveler into the USB port on my keyboard, USB hub or in the front of my tower, the unit is either not recognised or I receive an error message. Why?
If you have a desktop computer, make sure the DataTraveler is inserted directly into one of the main USB ports.
These USB ports are usually located in the back of the tower.
If these ports are difficult to access, we recommend a 3ft USB extension cable.

I am getting the following warning message ‘Kingston DataTraveler requires an active SafeConsole server to make it operational’ and cannot use my DTVP-M or DT4000-M drive. How do I resolve this?
This may occur if any one of the following is true:
PORT 443 is blocked – If a firewall is enabled, you will be required to open this port (443) as an exception, to allow traffic through (i.e. communication between the client and server).
Client Registry key has not been imported from the Deployment page – From Step 1 on the Deployment page, download SafeConsole.reg and install it on your computer.
The registry file (.reg) contains the key HKCU\Software\BlockMaster\DTVPM with a string value of "Console URL" and a data value of "https://servername/safestick".
The Internet Browser certificate has not been installed from the SafeConsoleDeployment page ( https://server/safeconsole/deployment.html)
The DTVP-M or DT4000-M client is not on the same network as SafeConsole or is unable to communicate with the server.
DTVP-M must have the ability to communicate, connect with and register SafeConsole during initialisation and/or each time the device (DTVP-M/DT4000-M) is reset.
Once initialised, the device can be used as a standard Secure USB device (NOTE:
The client 'reset' function can be disabled by the SafeConsole Administrator by turning on SafeConsole's 'Prohibit users from resetting" option in Device User Settings.)

What is causing the SafeConsole error stating "The certificate 'certificatename' presented by 'certificateissuer' is not trusted on this machine The reason is 'self signed certificate'. Please contact your administrator."?
If the browser certificate has not been installed from the Deployment page, the error message will occur prior to receiving the warning message.

Why do I get an error stating "Failed to connect to SafeConsole with HTTP error 500" when I try to re-install SafeConsole?
This occurs when SafeConsole is uninstalled then reinstalled on the same host using a different certificate password than the one used during the previous install.
If you have uninstalled (or plan on uninstalling) SafeConsole, please be sure to:
a. remove the browser certificate(s) installed during the previous installation OR
b. reinstall SafeConsole using the exact same certificate password used in the previous installation

My DTVP-M or DT4000-M won't load. Is there a way to determine what is causing it to hang?

FAQ: KDT-052411-MNG-07
I'm trying to initialize my device (DTVP-M / DT4000-M) and got the message box that states "Are you 'workstation_name/current_user' and responsible for this Kingston Data Traveler?". What does it mean?
This message box prompts the user to confirm his/her identity before initialising their device.
In this example, BLOCKMASTER1 represents the name of the computer (workstation) on which he or she is attempting to initialise the DTVP-M (or DT4000-M) and bmAdmin represents the username that is currently logged on to the system.
Clicking 'Yes' will allow you to proceed with initialisation; clicking 'No' will cancel the initialisation process and prevent use of the device.
FAQ: KDT-052411-MNG-08
Windows states that my DTVP-M or DT4000-M is write protected whenever I try to write to the drive or delete from it. What is causing this?
You may be logged in to the drive under read-only mode.
If you are ever logged in under read-only mode and wish to unlock the devicewith full read/write access to the secure data partition, you must shut down the device and log back in, leaving the 'Read-Only Mode' checkbox deselected prior to login.
