Roberts Testimonial
Bruce Pallman is extremely pleased with the business relationship he has enjoyed with Kingston since 2005 and values
the reputation the Kingston brand offers to his operation as well as his customers. "Kingston has provided our customers with
a very competitive pricepoint and with its reputation in the computer memory business, our customers are taking advantage of
lower price points with greater confidence. Quality is never an issue even though Kingston is relatively new to the Flash
media business," continues Pallman. "They are the perfect business partner responsive, easy to work with and they always
return phone calls. The combination of a respected brand, a high quality product line and amazing customer service, Kingston
easily meets all the requirements we seek when looking for new manufacturing partners. They are simply the type of organization
we enjoy doing business with." - Read Full Testimonial
Midwest Photo Exchange Testimonial
Competing in a sea of national chain and big box retailers hasn't been easy for Stuart Applebaum of the Midwest Photo Exchange
in Columbus, OH but he believes he has something bigger competing stores can never possess the trust of his customers.
"Everyone who works at Midwest Photo Exchange has a knowledge and great enthusiasm for photography which is something our
larger competitors cannot match," Applebaum says. "So if I tell my customers a product is good, they know I've used it
personally or have researched the product enough to recommend it."
Applebaum's interest in all things photo-related is exceeded, perhaps, only by his customers, 60 percent of whom are working
professional photographers and demand the top-quality cameras, lenses, digital memory, printers, lighting and assorted
darkroom (both digital and film) accessories that Midwest Photo Exchange offers.
"When you know and love the products you sell, your customers sense it and respect it," he explains. "People want to deal
with a salesman on a personal level, particularly with merchandise as sophisticated as camera equipment. And the combination
of product knowledge and a competitive price will help our customers choose us over an anonymous big box retail store."
If there's a competing store with a legitimate lower price, Applebaum and his staff encourage his customers to let them know
about it so they can match it. But the appeal of the Midwest Photo Exchange goes beyond price. It also comes from the fact
that the business is still family-run, not a giant conglomerate, so every customer is treated with respect and the utmost
professional courtesy. It's a business philosophy that dates back to the company's early days.
Applebaum got the idea to start a camera store while he was a graduate student in Ohio in the late 1970s. While studying
Education and Communications in grad school during the week, Applebaum bought and sold used camera equipment on the weekend
to help pay for his education and support his family. After a couple of brief stints owning a pair of camera stores in the
late 1980s, he sold those businesses to return to school. But the lure of the camera business pulled him back and in 1989
opened a new store that would ultimately become Midwest Photo Exchange.
The increasing demand for reliable memory cards at lower prices is what brought Applebaum to Kingston Technology.
"I wanted to pick one card to be our house brand," he says. "And when Kingston came on the scene, they had an extremely good
sales rep I was working with so I thought I'd give it a shot. So I tried it and slowly I began to notice that I never got any
cards back from my customers, which is unusual. With the other memory card companies, I would always get at least a few back
that were defective but with Kingston I never had a bad one, ever. They're extremely reliable. And as my customers know, I will
not sell anything to anybody unless I can say it's reliable."
Along with the reliability, his customers really liked the price of the Kingston cards, which were, on average, 20-30% lower
than the competition.
Where Applebaum was really able to spread the gospel of Kingston cards was at this year's WPPI convention in Las Vegas, which
attracted approximately 8,000 professional wedding and portrait photographers from across the country. During the show he met
with Mark Akoubian and Mark Leathem of Kingston and the three immediately hit it off. Applebaum was impressed by Kingston's
marketing plan to get the brand entered into the photography community's "collective unconscious."
"Until this year's WPPI show, many photographers did not know who Kingston was but they were willing to try it. Now that
they've tried it, they're coming into the store to request it. I can honestly say and I always tell my customers this
Kingston cards are as reliable, if not more reliable, than any other card on the market."
The top sellers at Midwest Photo Exchange are the Kingston CompactFlash cards in 1 GB and 2 GB capacities. While Kingston
Secure Digital (SD) cards are selling in 512 MB and 1 GB capacities, CF Cards still outsell SD cards by about 8-1. Applebaum
has also been selling a lot of Kingston DataTravelers in 512 MB and 1 GB sizes.
To keep up-to-date with his customer's needs for products like lower-priced memory cards, Applebaum is constantly traveling
to photography trade shows, scoping out the latest deals on the hottest products while always keeping reliability as the
number one standard. In addition to digital accessories like memory cards, traditional medium and large format cameras are
still going strong at Midwest Photo Exchange. The category that's seen the most robust growth in the last few years though
has been digital SLRs with Nikon and Canon's models leading the pack.
"The big thing now is information. New stuff is coming out every day so you have to relearn everything constantly," Applebaum
says. "But as I said before, simply hearing about the latest products is not enough. You have to use them so you know what
you're talking about. Our customers instill a lot of trust in us and they need to know they can count on our advice."

"Even though price is an issue for customers and they can save money by buying Kingston, it's not the biggest issue. The
biggest issue is reliability. And when you put those two together with Kingston's products it's a winning combination. For
other dealers considering Kingston's products, the zero return rate alone is a huge thing besides offering prices that are
very competitive." - Ron Cohen, C.E.O of 47th Street Photo
