Send a Picture of an Item from the Store While Shopping
By Kita Seymour
Mobile Phone: Palm Treo 650 with Cingular Wireless
Mobile Expansion Memory: Kingston 2-GB SD Card
When I was traveling on a recent trip, I decided to do some last-minute shopping for souvenirs.
As I stood in a shop, trying to decide between two items for a friend of mine, I wondered if I could get a second
opinion and called home. "It's tough to decide," said the voice on the other end of the line. "I wish I could see them."
I said, "Give me a couple of minutes, I want to try something." I saw someone send an image home from their mobile phone
in a TV commercial and wondered if it would really work. I found three methods for accomplishing this task. Using my
mobile phone, here is what I did:
Alternative #1 (via Media Option)
Take out my Palm Treo 650 and select the Camera option
Snap a picture of the item(s) in question
Select the Save icon in the lower left corner of the screen
Review images by selecting the multiple icon (looks like a series of little boxes) in the lower far left corner of the screen and scroll through images to ensure the picture just taken is indeed there.
Looking in the upper right corner of the screen, check the highlight on the icons to determine where the pictures are being stored: either directly on the phone or conveniently on the Flash memory card. (I save everything to my Kingston SD card because I want quick and easy access to my pictures and music files--popping back and forth between my SmartPhone, my notebook computer and my PC.)
Tap on the Media menu on the upper left of the photo review screen.
Within the Media window, select the Send option and then choose how to send the image: in my case, the choices are via Bluetooth, Messaging or VersaMail (Palm's e-mail application). I highlighted the VersaMail selection and hit OK. This automatically attaches the image to the e-mail.
This opened my e-mail program to compose a New message. Fill in the intended Addressee(s), Subject title and add any kind of accompanying Message to go with the image you want to send.
After you address the message to your intended recipient, you can always send a Test copy to yourself to see how it transmits.
Check over the Address, Subject and Message fields and tap Send as you would with a regular text e-mail message.
Once you've hit Send, and the transmission is complete, call the intended recipients to discuss the image and decide your next shopping steps.
Repeat as desired.
There's a second way to do this on the Palm Treo 650:
Alternative #2 (via VersaMail):
Open your e-mail program; on my Palm Treo 650, it's an Outlook-friendly e-mail application called VersaMail and it gets the job done.
Touch on the New bubble in the lower left corner of the screen to create a new message.
Address the message to the intended recipient
Add any Subject/title information and then include any comments in the Message field below.
Tap on the RED paperclip icon at the top right of your screen to open and create attachments within the message.
This opens a new screen where you have the option to select what "Type" of attachment you would like to e-mail. Touch on the pull-down menu and select Photo/Video (unless you know the exact file name, this is the easiest way to go).
The screen should now take you to a visual list of your photos on the memory card. Select the one you want to e-mail by tapping lightly on the Image to highlight it. (If you accidentally press too hard and the image opens, just tap again to return to the list of images and highlight the one you wish to send).
Tap on the Done bubble in the lower left corner when you are finished selecting the images you wish to send. Look at the images that come up and select the one you want to send. (Note: if you don't see the desired image, touch the icon in the upper right corner to make sure that you are accessing the memory card versus any images that might be stored directly on your phone).
Once you tap Done, the screen will return to the Attachments window and you will see a file name in the second box on the screen.
Inside the second white box on the screen you should see a photo file name, in my case it read: "Photo_071206_003" and there is a file size of 79kb beside the file name.
Select OK if you're ready to proceed or tap the Add bubble if you wish to include more images.
Tap the Done bubble when you are finished adding images.
Tap Send and your message is on its way.
The image arrived on my friend's PC a minute or so later.
My friend reviewed the items in question and helped me make the right choice to purchase.
That's one of the more successful souvenir hunts I've ever had. Isn't technology fun?
Alternative #3 (SMS Version):
I'm told that there is an even quicker/easier way to accomplish this if you have SMS (short messaging service), which is the ability to "text" on your Palm Treo 650. If you have texting capabilities, here's an alternative method for sending images from your device:
Open your phone's camera and capture the item.
Next, select the e-mail envelope icon on your screen.
This opens a message window, fill in the Address info.
Send the message with attached image from the SD memory card.
Discuss with recipient: yay or nay.
Buy (purchase the item) or continue shopping.
Repeat.
