Capture Memories While Vacationing and Send Images Home (Before You Return)

By Sarah Dexter

Mobile Phone: Palm Treo 650 with Cingular Wireless
Mobile Expansion Memory: Kingston 2-GB SD Card

Our trip to Hollywood was even more memorable when we sent images home to share with friends and family–before we got back.

I snapped a few phone pics on the Hollywood Walk of Fame to share favorite movie and TV stars with their fans back home. It worked well for me. Here's how you can do it.

Decide what you would like to photograph and then set up your Palm Treo 650 by:

  1. Select the Camera icon from the home menu. (Quick tip: if the camera icon is not readily available, access the Home menu by touching the button with the House icon and then select the Multimedia pull-down arrow on the upper right corner of the Treo's screen. Once you are in the Multimedia page, you can touch on the Camera icon).
  2. Snap a picture of what interests you.
  3. Select the Save icon in the lower left corner of the screen
  4. Now select the Review boxes icon in the far left lower corner of your screen and scroll through images to ensure the picture you just took is there.
  5. You can check to see where your images are being stored: on the upper right corner of your screen, you will see two icons; the farthest right is the Memory Card icon (which should be highlighted) and the one to its immediate left is the Device icon.

Helpful tip: press the Menu button (right above the red phone icon) or touch on the word Media to access the pull-down menu in the upper left corner of your Treo's screen. If one of the choices is Copy to Device then you know you're saving everything to the Memory Card by default. If when you check the pull-down menu it offers the option of Copy to Card, then you need to exit the pull-down menu and make sure the Memory Card icon is highlighted in the upper right corner of the Treo screen. Do this by tapping on the correct icon.

  6. It's easy to Save, Organize and Name albums on the Memory Card inside your phone. When you are in the Gallery area of your camera (the multiple squares icon) look on the upper middle right of your screen for the pull-down menu. It will indicate either: All, Unfiled, (an Album Name) or the last option is Manage Albums, below the dashed line in the pull-down menu.
  7. Touch on the Manage Albums option and you will see a new window that lets you: create a New album, Rename an existing album or Delete an existing album that you no longer want (or have archived somewhere else).

On the upper center area, you have the choice of highlighting either the Device option on the left or the (Memory) Card option on the right. If you find you like to view your pictures on a PC or other digital device, it's best to select the Card option since it makes moving and viewing files quick and easy.

This is also helpful when making actual photo prints. Pop the memory card into a commercial photo kiosk (or use a media reader with your own PC and printer) and out-putting prints is fairly easy to accomplish.

  8. Once you've snapped a few pictures, you can access the album option and create a new album and save images to it as you take your pictures. The Treo 650 lets you create a number of albums to keep images neatly organized.

Once you have created a New album on the SD card, and tapped OK, you should see the new album's name in the pull-down menu choices. If you see the new album name as the default (what you see without accessing the pull-down menu, all new photos you capture and save will be stored inside that new album until you change the default to All or another album name.

  9. Conversely, if you would like to transmit the album home ahead of you (make sure that your mobile e-mail application and phone's browser capabilities allow this) you can always send a copy of the album--just like you would send a regular e-mail with an attachment. When the recipient receives your photo album via e-mail, it will appear as a series of typical JPEG image files within an e-mail message that can be easily viewed and printed from most any computer.

  10. Now you can capture images from your phone on a whim; show the images on a big screen or share them with friends and family–even before you get home from your vacation. The choices are limited only by your imagination.
