Kingston Technology Releases 512-MB microSD Cards to Support Growing Demand for Mobile Phone Expansion Memory
Larger capacity cards enable applications, backup storage on advanced wireless devices.
Hsinchu, Taiwan – (April 20, 2006) –Kingston Technology Company, Inc., today announced the addition of 512-MB microSD
expansion memory cards to further enhance its growing line of mobile memory solutions. The increased capacity and format is
essential for users of current and next generation multifunction mobile phones that require more memory to power premium features
such as MP3 players, video functionality, high-quality cameras and 3-D gaming.
“As multifunction Smartphones gain acceptance in the domestic marketplace, consumers will find content and applications from online
mobile portals that they want to own and use on their phones. With today’s advanced video compression techniques, for example, a
single 512-MB card can hold several full-length movie downloads,” said Dave Lee, Flash Memory Product Manager, APAC Business
Division, Kingston. “And as consumers upgrade their handsets, a 512-MB microSD memory card is ideal for backing up address books,
photos, contacts, data files and ringtones,” added Dave.
“From digital music to 3D gaming to TV and video, multimedia is emerging as a clear driver for the future growth of the mobile phone
market. Without sufficient storage, however, users will be unable to fully leverage the multimedia-rich, advanced mobile phones now
coming to market,” said David Linsalata, research analyst, IDC.
Kingston’s new microSD cards ship bundled with a Secure Digital (SD) adapter for use as a full-size SD card. To protect against accidental
data loss, the adapter has a built-in write-protect switch. The 512-MB capacity card follows the 256-MB microSD first announced during
the Consumer Electronics Show in January. Larger capacities will continue to follow as device and mobile content needs dictate.
