DDR3 memory modules have the same physical dimensions as their equivalent DDR2 and DDR counterparts, but have different pin
configurations.
The table below compares the different modules for DDR2 and DDR3:
Notes:
1. DDR3 modules are keyed differently to prevent insertion into DDR2 memory sockets.
2. DDR3 SODIMM modules have the same form-factor as DDR2, but with 4 additional pins. They are also keyed differently to prevent
insertion into DDR2 sockets.
Because of different voltages and pin configurations, DDR3 modules will have a different 'key' or notch in their connector to prevent them
from being plugged into an incompatible socket. DDR3 memory modules will only fit in systems and motherboards designed to specifically
support DDR3 memory.
