DDR3 Memory Chips

DDR3 memory chips are made in the same FBGA (Fine-pitch Ball Grid Array) form-factor chips as DDR2, as shown below.

DDR3 module

All DRAM chip connections are below the DRAM chip.

DDR3 chips are also internally different from DDR2 memory chips. For example, DDR3 memory chips feature:

  • 1.5 Volt operation, delivering about 30% less power usage as well as generating less heat compared to DDR2
  • Operational enhancements to increase memory performance, efficiency, and timing margins
  • Chip sizes up to 4 Gigabit, allowing for 16GB or larger memory modules.
