Kingston Technology Launches MMCmobile for Expanding Cell Phone Market
New Dual-Voltage, High-Capacity MMCmobile Cards Support Increasing Demands of Next-Generation Mobile Digital Devices
[19 April 2005] - Kingston Technology, the world’s leading independent memory manufacturer, today announced
the release of new MMCmobile digital media products designed to target both the expanding mobile phone and mobile digital
device markets.
Kingston Technology’s high-capacity MMCmobile cards are designed for use in next-generation mobile phones and digital
devices that will offer enhanced media and storage functionality. Popular digital devices that will soon utilise the
smaller size and dual operating ranges offered by MMCmobile card technology include camera phones, PDAs, MP3 players,
smartphones, and digital cameras.
“Currently there are a handful of devices that take advantage of MMCmobile, but as cell phones and other mobile
digital products are released with more features in a smaller form factor, we expect to see MMCmobile become widely
used over the next 18 months,” said Jim Selby, Product Marketing Manager EMEA, Kingston Technology.
The flexibility of smaller size and dual operating voltage ranges offered by MMCmobile make it ideally suited for mobile
device applications where space-saving and extending battery life is essential. Kingston Technology MMCmobile cards will
initially release in 128 and 256MB formats, shipping in quantity at the end of the month. Larger capacity MMCmobile cards
will follow as digital device needs dictate.
To maximise flexibility and ease of use for the end user, Kingston Technology’s MMCmobile cards will ship with an adapter
to allow them to fit into the standard MMC card size format. MMCmobile cards are backward compatible with legacy host
devices built to previous MultiMediaCard standards. Kingston Technology’s MMCmobile cards are also compatible with
devices such as the Nokia® 6630, 6620i, 6680, 6681 and 6682.
