There are several possible reasons why your DataTraveler is not being detected in Windows.

1. The DataTraveler could be conflicting with a pre-assigned drive letter. To resolve, do the following (Do not do this for a "Privacy" drive that assigns two drive letters):

1. Insert the DataTraveler and right-click on My Computer located on your desktop or under the Start button on the Task bar.
2. Select “Manage.”
3. Select “Disk Management” on the left window pane.
4. Locate the DataTraveler on the right window pane.
5. Right-click on the drive and select “Change Drive Letter and Paths.”
6. Click Change and select a new drive letter from the drop-down box. Then click OK.

2. The DataTraveler may be conflicting with pre-installed software. Disable all applications running in the background prior to installation of the Data Traveler.

3. If you have never used the USB ports, make sure they are working and enabled via the BIOS. Refer to your system’s manual for instructions on how to access the BIOS. The USB ports should also be enabled in Device Manager. To access Device Manger, right click My Computer and select “Properties.” On the System Properties dialog box, click on the Hardware tab and then on the Device Manager button. Locate the Kingston Data Traveler, usually under “Hard disk controllers” or listed as “Other.” Right-click on the device and select the “enable” option.

4. Make sure you have the latest Windows Service Pack. Windows Service Packs contain fixes and updated drivers for USB devices. To find out if you have a Service Pack installed, Right-click My Computer and select “Properties”. On the General tab under “System” you will find the Windows version and Service Pack information listed. If no Service Pack is listed, you can download it from the Microsoft Website.

5. If you have a desktop computer, make sure the DataTraveler is inserted directly into one of the main USB ports on the back of the PC. Front ports, keyboard ports or USB Hubs may not supply sufficient power for the High Speed DataTraveler to function properly.

6. If the DataTraveler shows up in Disk Manager but not My Computer (Computer in Windows Vista and 7) or Explorer and you have TweakUI installed, it may modify the registry to make drives hidden. To resolve, go to “TweakUI Properties” and configure it to display drives.

7. If you received a (Code 10) error and have more than one USB device inserted, remove the devices and insert the Kingston DataTraveler by itself. This error may be an indication that your particular system cannot support more than one USB device at a time.

8. Make sure you have the latest BIOS and/or firmware installed on the computer. The BIOS/Firmware can be downloaded from the computer manufacturer’s Website.

Because the DataTraveler is 32GB or larger, Windows 7 will not allow you to format it FAT32. You will have to convert it using a Command Prompt. Click on Start>Run and type in CMD and click on the OK button. On the command prompt type the following (see image). Where F is your drive letter for your drive, replace it with what ever yours is. Please take notice of the spaces in between.

Unplug the other USB device, insert the DataTraveler drive and restart the system. After the DataTraveler is configured you should then be able to connect the other USB device.

This is due to a power limitation. Though some USB devices may work fine in these USB ports, 2.0 USB High Speed devices seem to require more power. In order to resolve this issue, you will need to insert the DataTraveler directly into one of the main USB ports. These USB ports are usually located in the back of the tower. If these ports are difficult to access we recommend a 3ft USB extension cable.

This may occur if any one of the following is true: PORT 443 is blocked – If a firewall is enabled, you will be required to open this port (443) as an exception, to allow traffic through (i.e. communication between the client and server)

Client Registry key has not been imported from the Deployment page – From Step 1 on the Deployment page, download SafeConsole.reg and install it on your computer. The registry file (.reg)will contain the following key HKCU\Software\BlockMaster\DTVPM with a string value of “Console URL” and a data value of “https://servername/safestick"

The Internet Browser certificate has not been installed from the SafeConsole Deployment page ( https://server/safeconsole/deployment.html)

The DTVP-M or DT4000-M client is not on the same network as SafeConsole or is unable to communicate with the server

DTVP-M must have the ability to communicate, connect, and register with SafeConsole during initialization and/or each time the device (DTVP-M/DT4000-M) is reset. Once initialized, the device can be used as a standard Secure USB device (NOTE: The client ‘reset’ function can be disabled by the SafeConsole Administrator by turning on SafeConsole’s ‘Prohibit users from resetting” option in Device User Settings.)

Clicking ‘Yes’ will allow you to proceed with initialization; clicking ‘No’ will cancel the initialization process and prevent use of the device.

If you are ever logged in under read-only mode and wish to unlock the device with full read/write access to the secure data partition, you must shutdown the device and log back in, leaving the ‘Read-Only Mode’ check box unchecked prior to login.

Windows may not recognize the MacOS Extended or Standard file system. To resolve, format the drive in MacOS DOS so that it can be used in both environments.

WARNING: Formatting will erase all of the data on the DataTraveler. Back up your data before proceeding.

1. Insert the DataTraveler into the Mac OS X machine and wait for it to mount.
2. Click on the "GO" option on the menu bar.
3. Double-click on Utilities (If you do not see Utilities, double-click on Applications and then double-click on the Utilities folder.)
4. Double-click on the Disk Utility icon.
5. On the Disk Utility Dialog box, click once on the Kingston DataTraveler active partition.
   Note: There will be two listings for the DataTraveler, the first one is the active partition and the second is the volume label.
6. Click the erase tab located on the right side of the screen.
7. Using the Volume Format drop-down, select "MS-DOS File System" from the list.
8. Click Erase.

Be aware MacOS 10.6.5 will support full read and write access to exFAT formatted drives. So formatting the drive using exFAT file system may also resolve this problem. MacOS still has read only access to NTFS formatted drives.

Some devices (MP3 players, digital photo frames, etc) will not read NTFS or exFAT file systems.

Also Windows XP and Vista will require an update in order to access exFAT.
