Job Details - Systems Engineer VMware - Fountain Valley, CA
Department: SSD Product Engineering

This position requires expert technical background in the Enterprise Storage system industry, with focus on storage and system configuration, design, implementation, and performance optimization. Candidate must possess expert knowledge of VMWare, Windows Server and Linux environments. Candidate will be working in a lab environment where they will be responsible for supporting the development of new storage hardware via extensive compatibility and performance testing, test automation, hardware certification, troubleshooting hardware-related performance issues, and will be required to communicate results to both technical and non-technical audiences. Candidate should possess an attitude and aptitude for learning new technologies, mentoring, and contributing to a team. At times, the candidate will be interacting with the customer to understand their environment and provide performance-related solutions.


Essential Functions:

  • Develop technical solutions for enterprise/cloud customer business issues including identifying new technologies or technologies using Kingston products and solutions.
  • Install, configure, provision and use storage management hardware. Monitor, analyze, and report on data storage utilization and performance characteristics.
  • Integrate storage solutions with physical hosts and virtual machines. Document, test, and validate all installations.
  • Administer, design, and upgrade VMWare environments with a focus on storage performance optimization, hardware certification and troubleshooting performance-related issues.
  • Administer, design, and upgrade Windows Server environments with a focus on storage performance optimization, storage spaces direct configurations, and troubleshooting performance-related issues.
  • Administer, design, and upgrade Linux Server environments with a focus on storage performance optimization and troubleshooting performance-related issues.
  • Automate storage-related performance tests in VMWare, Windows Server and Linux environments.
  • Compose technical white papers illustrating ways to achieve optimal performance in these environments utilizing Flash-based storage hardware.
  • Craft self-contained performance scripts that can be provided to customers, partners and reviewers demonstrating storage performance in an easy-to-understand output format.
  • Develop a user-friendly database to capture all performance-related test data that is accessible to both technical and non-technical employees.
  • Technical Liaison to Product Development Team / Lab Team.

Requirements:

Five to six years of experience in the following areas.

VMWare:

  • Expertise with vSphere ESXi Server v5.x, 6.x , vCenter Server, vSAN and/or other VMware products.
  • VMWare ESXi deployment/patching/troubleshooting/performance configuration.
  • Expertise with HCIBench, configurations, performance optimization.
  • VMWare cluster management & optimization.

Windows:

  • Windows Server 2008, 2012, 2016, 2019 Administration.

Linux:

  • Expertise in Linux environments, such as Red Hat, CentOS and Ubuntu.
  • Experience with at least one of the following Software-Defined Storage applications: Storage Spaces Direct, Nutanix, Ceph, Netapp, Pure, Quantum, etc.

SAN/NAS:

  • Experience configuring SAN Storage Arrays.
  • Experience trouble-shooting / administrating SAN environments (Fiber Channel or iSCSI).
  • Experience with server hardware assembly, break/fix, performance configuration and troubleshooting hardware-related issues.
  • Excellent understanding of Network Attached Storage (NAS).
  • Experience with Virtual switch and network setup.

Scripting:

  • Build and maintain tools for automation, performance testing, integration, OS deployment, backup, monitoring and operations.
  • Experience with scripting automation including but not limited to: Python, Shell, Ruby, Powershell.
  • Experience with ESXi Server, vCenter Server and/or other VMware products and Linux performance tools.
  • Experience with storage & backup technologies, including NetApp, Pure, Quantum and Veeam is desired.

Additional Requirements:

  • Significant industry knowledge and experience in areas such as Software Defined Data Center (SDDC), Software Defined Networking (SDN), Software Defined Storage (SDS), Hyper converged Infrastructure (HCI).
  • Knowledge of industry benchmarking standards and performance tuning/sizing.
  • Strong writing skills with the ability to create technical documentation, respond to RFPs, and submit professional reports (Technical White Paper creation).
  • Solid understanding of CPU, memory, network, and storage hardware and software subsystems as they relate to performance.
  • Understanding of Storage Hardware Architecture (Partitioning / RAID) and experience with storage troubleshooting.
  • Experience with Cisco or Network hardware products and server hardware esp. Dell, HPE, IBM, Supermicro.
  • Must be available for occasional domestic and international travel.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or Computer Engineering or equivalent related work experience.
  • VMWare Certified Professional (VCP Certification) is a plus.
