Embedded storage - eMMC™ storage memory for device manufacturers
Kingston eMMC™ is an embedded storage solution using a non-volatile memory system, comprised of both flash memory and a flash memory controller, which simplifies the application interface design and frees the host processor from low-level flash memory management. eMMC (Embedded Multi-Media Card) is a soldered-down SMT storage solution for space-constrained applications. eMMC is a popular storage component for many consumer electronic devices, including smartphones, tablet PCs, eBook readers, electronic learning products, IoT, cloudbooks, smart TVs, set-top boxes, smart home appliances and many wearable devices. It is being increasingly adopted in many industrial and embedded applications.
Beyond its use in consumer products, the compact size, low power consumption and numerous enhanced features of eMMC mean that it is being rapidly adopted in many other embedded applications, such as Single Board Computers (SBC), robotics, medical devices, networking and building control devices. With the rapid growth of the IoT market, eMMC is finding its way to newer applications.
Kingston® eMMC™ flash memory follows the JEDEC eMMC 5.1 standard and encloses the NAND flash and eMMC controller inside one JEDEC standardised package to provide a standard interface to the host CPU. The eMMC controller directs the flash management, including ECC, wear-levelling, lOPS optimisation and read sensing, significantly reducing the storage management burden on the host CPU.
Kingston eMMC™ simplifies system design and reduces time to market. The standard interface makes fast-changing NAND technology invisible to the host and the host processor doesn’t have to keep changing its software to accommodate every NAND technology change and variation. This helps significantly reduce the design-in complexity and shorten the qualification cycle.
For developers, eMMC simplifies the interface design and qualification process, resulting in a reduction in time to market and facilitates support for future Flash device offerings.
Small BGA package sizes and low power consumption make eMMC a viable, low-cost memory solution for mobile and embedded products. To better meet the requirement of many space-constrained wearable and IoT applications, Kingston has released the world’s smallest eMMC package with standard JEDEC footprint. The technology specifications of eMMC are managed by JEDEC, the global leader in developing open standards for the microelectronics industry.
Key benefits
Kingston eMMC™ helps improve the performance of the entire system. The eMMC controller frees up the host processor’s valuable resources from NAND management so the host processor can use its processing power on other tasks.
As opposed to SLC NAND, Kingston eMMC™ utilises MLC and 3D TLC NAND, making higher-capacity storage for embedded applications much more affordable and enabling today’s embedded designs to meet increasing demands for storage, providing a cost-effective solution.
The Enhanced Mode (pSLC Mode) configuration of Kingston eMMC™ is available for better performance/endurance.
Kingston I-Temp eMMC
Kingston® I-Temp eMMC™ Flash memory offers JEDEC eMMC5.1 features and is backward compatible with earlier eMMC standards. It has all the advantages of standard eMMC, plus the operating temperature range of the device meets industrial operating temperature requirements (-40°C~+85°C). This makes it an ideal storage solution for outdoor, surveillance, factory automation, transportation and other applications in fluid environmental conditions.
Kingston Automotive-Temp eMMC
Kingston Automotive-Temp eMMC is designed to meet the needs of applications that require an extended operating temperature range. It offers JEDEC eMMC 5.1 features and is backward-compatible to earlier eMMC standards. It has all the advantages of standard eMMC plus the operating temperature range of the device is -40°C~+105°C, making it an ideal memory solution for harsh environments, outdoor signage, surveillance, factory automation, transportation, servers, touchscreen kiosks and other applications subject to extreme environmental conditions.
