Intel Xeon W processor series and W790 chipset overview

Based on architecture from Intel’s 4th and 5th Gen Xeon Scalable platforms, the Xeon W processor series and W790 chipset were introduced to serve the workstation and high-end desktop (HEDT) markets.

The Xeon W lineup launched in two primary segments: the Xeon W-3400 series for expert workstations and the Xeon W-2400 series for mainstream workstations. One year later, both were refreshed with higher core counts, resulting in the updated Xeon W-3500 and W-2500 series.

The Xeon W-3500/3400 series supports up to 112 PCIe Gen 5.0 lanes with an 8-channel DDR5 memory architecture, while the W-2500/2400 series offers up to 64 PCIe Gen 5.0 lanes and a 4-channel DDR5 configuration. Both platforms incorporate server-class DDR5-4800 Registered DIMMs (RDIMMs), marking a first in this segment. Another notable innovation is support for overclockable server memory, enabled through Intel XMP-compatible RDIMMs and selected 'X' series Xeon W processors.

Memory architecture

Memory architecture is based on four and eight channels arranged in up to two banks per processor. Each processor can be configured with 4, 8 or 16 modules, depending on the motherboard layout, to achieve the maximum aggregated memory bandwidth.

Xeon 3500 / 3400
