While a server platform or motherboard may state that it supports a specific memory speed, the CPU model number may limit how fast the memory is allowed to operate. Mid- and low-end CPU models may toggle memory speeds down. This happens automatically, and memory is backwards compatible, but there may be a price difference between memory speed grades.
